Beginning the Adventure: Bike Path 'Krzna Valley'
Our journey begins with the 'Krzna Valley' Bike Path, which is a perfect introduction to the charms of Podlasie. Located near the village of Porosiuki (Porosiuki 11A, 21-500), this route is easily accessible and well prepared for cyclists of all ages. To get there, it's best to use National Road 2 and then follow local signs. The path is open all year round, although the best riding conditions are from spring to autumn.
The route, which is about 6 km long, leads through the picturesque areas of the Krzna River valley, offering not only riding pleasure, but also unforgettable views. Along the way you will encounter comfortable resting places, including shelters and benches, where you can recuperate and admire the surrounding nature. Viewpoints are a special attraction, including a pulpit that offers a panoramic view of the area.
For families with children, the path is an ideal choice due to its safety and gentle terrain. It's a good idea to bring provisions for a picnic, as there are no refreshment facilities along the way. Also remember to bring water, sunscreen and headgear, especially on sunny days.
Along the way, note the abundance of local flora and fauna. For those interested in nature, we recommend bringing binoculars - you may be able to spot some of the numerous species of birds that inhabit the Krzna valley. The route is also a great opportunity for environmental education for the youngest, showing them the beauty and importance of natural ecosystems.
After completing the ride along the 'Krzna Valley' path, you should plan a short rest on the beach in Porosiuki, which is located nearby. This is an ideal place to relax and cool off, especially on warmer days. Keep in mind that this is private land of the village of Porosiuki, so maintain a special respect for the place and its inhabitants.
The 'Krzna Valley' bike path is not only a tourist attraction, but also a testament to the care of local natural and cultural heritage. A ride along this route is a perfect introduction to further exploration of Podlasie, giving a foretaste of what awaits us on the next stages of our cycling adventure.
Into History: The White Eagle Trail and Castle Mountain in Drohiczyn
The next stage of our cycling trip is the White Eagle Trail, which takes us deep into the fascinating history of Podlasie. This route, which starts near Augustow (16-300 Augustow), leads through picturesque areas, combining natural beauty with the rich cultural heritage of the region. To get there, it's best to use national road 61 and then follow the local trail markers.
The White Eagle Trail is a route of more than 80 kilometers, which requires good physical preparation and proper planning. It is worth dividing it into stages, especially if you are traveling with children. The route leads along beautiful lakes such as Białe, Studzieniczne, Sajenek and Sajno, offering unforgettable views and the opportunity to commune with pristine nature. Along the way, you will encounter numerous memorials and historical landmarks, which provide an excellent opportunity to learn about the turbulent history of the region.
Before setting out, stock up on sufficient provisions and water, as there is only one store on the trail. It's also a good idea to bring along basic tools to repair your bike, as some sections can be challenging. For safety, we recommend riding with a helmet and bringing a first aid kit.
After riding part of the White Eagle Trail, we head toward Drohiczyn, where another attraction awaits us - Castle Mountain. This place, located on Castle Street in Drohiczyn (17-312), offers not only a fascinating history lesson, but also breathtaking views of the Bug River valley.
Castle Hill in Drohiczyn is a unique place where history intertwines with natural beauty. It takes about 10-15 minutes to climb the hill, and an observation deck awaits at the top, offering panoramic views of the picturesque bend of the Bug River. It's the perfect place for a break in your journey and a moment to reflect on the rich history of the region.
On the grounds of the complex you can admire the remains of the former castle, the entrance gate stylized as a triumphal arch and the chapel. It is worth noting the architecture of the surrounding temples - both Catholic and Orthodox, which testify to the multicultural heritage of Podlasie.
For families with children, a visit to Castle Mountain can be a fascinating history lesson. It is a good idea to prepare short stories about the history of Drohiczyn before the trip, which will enliven the imagination of the youngest. Remember to wear comfortable shoes, as the terrain is uneven and can be slippery if it rains.
After visiting Castle Mountain, take a walk through the streets of Drohiczyn, which are a living museum in themselves. The city also offers the opportunity to take a water streetcar cruise on the Bug River or rent a canoe, which can be a great diversion for our cycling trip.
This leg of our trip combines active recreation with deep immersion in the history and culture of Podlasie. The White Eagle Trail and the Castle Mountain in Drohiczyn are places that will remain in your memory for a long time, showing how rich and fascinating the history of this region of Poland is.
Final Expedition: The Land of Open Shutters and the Great Synagogue in Tykocin
The final stage of our bicycle odyssey through Podlasie leads us to two unique places that are the quintessence of the cultural richness of this region: The Land of Open Shutters and the Great Synagogue in Tykocin.
The Land of Open Shutters is a unique tourist route centered on the village of Trześcianka (Trześcianka 183, 17-210). To get here, it is best to take provincial road 686 from Bialystok in the direction of Hajnówka. The route is accessible all year round, but looks best from late spring to early autumn, when nature is in full bloom.
What distinguishes the Land of Open Shutters is its distinctive wooden architecture with richly decorated shutters that are always open - hence the region's name. Passing through villages such as Trześcianka, Soce or Puchły, we have the opportunity to admire examples of folk architecture unique in the country, with ornaments derived from East Slavic traditions.
For families with children, a trip to the Land of Open Shutters can be a fascinating lesson in ethnography and art history. It's a good idea to prepare a small field game before the trip, involving finding and sketching the most interesting shutter designs. Remember, however, that we are visiting private properties - keep quiet and respect the residents.
Along the way it is worth stopping by Orthodox churches, which are an integral part of the cultural landscape of Podlasie. We especially recommend a visit to the church in Puchły, famous for its miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary.
The last stop on our trip is the Great Synagogue in Tykocin (Kozia 2, 16-080 Tykocin). This is one of the most important monuments of Jewish culture in Poland, bearing witness to the centuries-old presence of the Jewish community in the area. The synagogue, built in 1642, has survived the turbulence of history and today is a remarkable example of Baroque religious architecture.
A visit to the synagogue is not only a history lesson, but also an opportunity to learn about Jewish culture and tradition. Inside, you can admire the richly decorated prayer hall and a museum exhibit dedicated to the history of Jews in Podlasie. Special educational programs have been prepared for children, which introduce Jewish culture in an accessible way.
The Great Synagogue is open to visitors every day, except on Jewish holidays. Admission tickets cost about PLN 25 per adult, but it's worth checking current prices on the museum's official website. Restrooms and parking are available on site.
After visiting the synagogue, take a walk through the charming streets of Tykocin, which itself is like a living museum. There is also a castle nearby, which can be an additional attraction, especially for the younger participants of the trip.
Our bicycle journey through the heritage of Podlasie is coming to an end, but the memories and experiences gathered along the way will remain in our memories for a long time. From the picturesque landscapes of the Krzna Valley, through the historic White Eagle trails and the majestic Castle Mountain in Drohiczyn, to the unique wooden houses of the Land of Open Shutters and the monumental Great Synagogue in Tykocin - each stage of this trip unveiled another layer of the fascinating history and culture of Podlasie.
This bicycle odyssey not only allowed us to actively spend time in the lap of nature, but most importantly enabled us to deeply immerse ourselves in the cultural and natural wealth of this unique region of Poland. We hope that this tour will inspire you to your own discoveries and adventures in Podlasie, a region that invariably impresses with its authenticity and diversity.
