Description
Westerplatte is a symbol of Poland's heroic defense during the outbreak of World War II. This historic peninsula in Gdansk was the place where the greatest turmoil of the 20th century began on September 1, 1939.
Despite overwhelming enemy forces, Polish soldiers defended themselves for seven days, becoming a symbol of patriotism and courage. Today you can admire the monumental 25-meter-high Monument to the Defenders of the Coast and an outdoor exhibition displaying more than 200 plans, drawings and photographs.
While walking around the peninsula, check out the museum in the former guardhouse and visit the Defenders Cemetery.
