Description
The ruins of the royal castle in Szydłów are a fascinating monument dating back to the 14th century, erected by King Casimir III the Great in 1354.
Nicknamed the 'Polish Carcassonne,' this Gothic-Renaissance structure impresses with its medieval urban layout and massive defensive walls.
Visitors can admire the Krakow Gate, the two-story Knights' Hall and the Treasury Tower, which houses the Regional Museum. A special attraction are the medieval hypocaustic furnaces and the former throne room and torture chamber in the basement.
