Almourol Castle

Almourol Castle is a 12th-century Templar fortress built on a granite island in the middle of the Tagus River—one of the most picturesque places in Portugal.

Built in 1171 by Master Gualdim Pais on Roman and Moorish foundations, the castle impresses with its dramatic location and authentic defensive architecture. Nine round towers, a central watchtower, and granite walls conceal Templar inscriptions and symbols.

A short boat trip to the island and a climb up the towers are rewarded with panoramic views of the Tagus.
