Description
Porta di Santa Maria is the only surviving entrance to medieval Civita di Bagnoregio, carved into volcanic tuff by the Etruscans 2,500 years ago and rebuilt in Renaissance style in 1558. Above the Gothic arch is a lion's head, the coat of arms of Bagnoregio, and the side reliefs depict lions holding human heads, commemorating the victory over the Monaldeschi family. The walls feature preserved crosses in triangles, probably carved by the Knights Templar returning from the Holy Land. The gate is a fascinating blend of Etruscan roots, medieval rebellions, and Renaissance elegance.
