Description
The Mermaid Monument on the Vistula River is one of the most recognizable symbols of Warsaw. This impressive 4-meter bronze sculpture, unveiled in June 1939, depicts a mermaid holding a shield with an eagle and the inscription 'Warsaw' and a raised sword.
The monument was initiated by President Stefan Starzynski in 1936. The original plan was for a 20-meter glass structure in the middle of the Vistula River, but financial and technical considerations determined the current form.
It is not only a tourist attraction, but also a witness to the city's history and a symbol of its prowess.
