Holy Church of Hagia Sophia

Holy Church of Hagia Sophia is one of the oldest churches in Thessaloniki, dating back to the 7th century. This UNESCO-listed landmark impresses with its Byzantine architecture and spectacular mosaics, especially the one from the 9th century depicting the Ascension of Christ in the dome.

The temple has witnessed the turbulent history of the region - serving as a cathedral, a Latin cathedral during the Latin occupation and even a mosque during the Ottoman period.

The marble columns and Theodosius-style capitals date back to the 5th century and were probably salvaged from an earlier church.
