Description

The Cracow Saltworks Castle - Wieliczka Saltworks Museum is a Gothic castle dating back to the 13th century, which for centuries was the headquarters of the Wieliczka and Bochnia Salt Mines management.

The castle's walls house a unique archaeological exhibition presenting the history of Wieliczka and the only collection of salt shakers in Poland. You can admire priceless documents from the 13th and 14th centuries related to the Cracow Saltworks - one of the largest enterprises of medieval Europe.

The architecture of the castle impresses with its Gothic halls, including a unique room with a ribbed vault supported by a single pillar. It is an ideal place for lovers of history, architecture and culture.

avatarIrina (IP)a year agoThis museum is free, and has a potential. You buy tickets in one place, with a shop, the entrance to the museum is behind a corner, wide open but guarded. I expected someone downstairs either to issue an audio guide, or a booklet, or to show around themselves (I know I'm oldfashioned), but no, they are just a better looking addition to the security guards, either letting you in or not. The building, the castle, itself is interesting and has a good feeling about it. There is a keep tower to it too, free, go around the whole building. I saw a room with a collection of salt shakers, unfortunately not much details. But funny to recognise two(!) I saw in my friends' kitchens a couple of decades ago. Will tell them they should keep theirs. There was two temporarily modern art exhibitions, and I really liked those.
avatarScott Williamsa year agoIt's definitely worth a day trip from Prague. You can buy a return ticket directly on the very nice & new air conditioned train from any of the stations near prague. Make sure you also do the 2nd bit of the tour to the museum, which is included in your ticket. Gives you a real history of the mine & mining. The guides are excellent. Check out the cathedral & grab a snack on your way back after leaving the mine.
avatarShubham Agarwal2 years agoIt has good salt work and 2 floors of porcelain work. I didn't like it that much as I was expecting it to contain the history of salt mining in poland or world , but I guess that's something which is covered by salt mine already. I also wanted to visit the castle but it was closed due to renovation
