Description

Westerplatte is a symbol of Poland's heroic defense during the outbreak of World War II. This historic peninsula in Gdansk was the place where the greatest turmoil of the 20th century began on September 1, 1939.

Despite overwhelming enemy forces, Polish soldiers defended themselves for seven days, becoming a symbol of patriotism and courage. Today you can admire the monumental 25-meter-high Monument to the Defenders of the Coast and an outdoor exhibition displaying more than 200 plans, drawings and photographs.

While walking around the peninsula, check out the museum in the former guardhouse and visit the Defenders Cemetery.

avatarSandra Kvederytėa week agoA powerful and emotionally moving place — definitely worth a visit. Although some areas are currently under maintenance, access to the monument is open and easy. It was not difficult to find, and there is convenient parking nearby. You can also grab a quick bite in the area. While there were quite a few visitors, the space is large and well spread out, so it didn’t feel crowded.
avatarsydneydevine2 months agoVery interesting historical site. Combined with a nice walk on the promenade beside the Baltic Sea. Very enjoyable trip to see. The portaloos near the bus park were probably the smelliest toilets ever experienced. Hilarious to stand back and watch people retch and heave as they entered. The smell was truly horrific.
avatarLyu T3 weeks agoMemorial for commemorance of the beginning of the most terrifying war in human history. I strongly recommend everyone to visit this part of city, have a walk around local sites and get to know how war began.
