Description
Shelley Memorial is a unique monument located at University College, Oxford. This white marble sculpture by Edward Onslow Ford depicts Percy Bysshe Shelley as a naked figure cast ashore after his drowning in Italy.
Placed in a small domed hall, the sculpture was originally intended for a Protestant cemetery in Rome, but turned out to be too large. The work impresses with its idealistic, slightly androgynous depiction of the poet, while being a fascinating example of late Victorian sculpture.
It is a must-see for lovers of literature, history and art.
