Description
Lydford Castle and Saxon Town is a fascinating historical monument with a rich past dating back to the 9th century.
The impressive 13th century castle, built on the site of an earlier 12th century tower, served as a prison for those accused of violating forest laws. Its 10-foot thick walls and Norman-style windows are very impressive.
The Saxon town, once prosperous thanks to the tin trade, had its own mint. The layout of the medieval streets is still evident in today's village. Natural fortifications, including an earthen rampart, helped repel a Viking attack in 997.
