Description
Lech Hill is the cradle of Polish statehood and a place full of fascinating history.
Here, according to legend, Lech saw a white eagle against the backdrop of the setting sun and decided to found a stronghold named Gniezno (from the word 'nest').
On the hill is the majestic cathedral with the 12th-century Gniezno Doors, a masterpiece of Romanesque art depicting the life of St. Adalbert.
Archaeological excavations here have uncovered pagan barrows and tombs dating back to the 11th century, attesting to the rich history of the site even before the baptism of Poland.
