Description
Devil's Quoits is a fascinating Neolithic stone circle and barrow, 4,000-5,000 years old. It originally consisted of 36 standing stones arranged in a circle, surrounded by a deep ditch.
The site is shrouded in intriguing legend - it is said that the devil played quoits (a kind of ring-throwing game) with a beggar for his soul, and the stones landed where they still stand today.
Between 2002 and 2008, the monument was restored - the original stones were repositioned, and 20 new stones were placed in the original holes. For lovers of prehistory and mysterious legends, this is a real treat!

Faheem Anwar4 months agoRecinstructed but still an eary place. Freecar park for around 8-10 cars. Path leading up to it was very muddy (February). Saw a mini murmuration.

Chris Gledhill4 years agoA nice piece of history. Takes a while to find as it’s tucked away between and industrial site and fishing lakes at the end of a long lane but it’s well signposted when you’re there and it had its own dedicated free car park with space for about 8 cars. It’s a short walk from the car park (might be a struggle with a pushchair or wheelchair). The stones are picturesque and the site feels special. There’s a sole notice board giving some history. It’s a bit disappointing to learn the site is mostly a reconstruction and the stones are not the originals, hence just 3 star rating.Related categories
