Description
Carevets is a majestic medieval fortress on Carevec Hill, the seat of the Second Bulgarian Empire from 1185 to 1393. Its restored walls conceal over 400 house foundations, 18 churches, and the ruins of a royal palace.
At the top of the hill stands the reconstructed Patriarchal Cathedral with its dark, modernist frescoes telling the story of the empire. Baldwin's Tower commemorates the imprisonment of the Latin emperor, and the evening light and sound show brings Bulgarian history to life with spectacular illuminations and music.
