Description
The Basilica of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Chelm is an impressive monument of sacred architecture, combining influences of Western European Baroque with elements of Orthodox architecture.
Erected in 1735-1756 according to plans by Pavel Fontana, it impresses with its eight-part dome and three-nave layout in the shape of a Latin cross.
Inside it you can admire a silver antepedium from the 18th century depicting the Virgin Mary and a replica of the famous image of Our Lady of Chelm, associated with the victory in the Battle of Beresteczko in 1651.
It is a place with a rich history, having been successively an Orthodox church, a Greek Catholic cathedral and a Roman Catholic church.
