Day 1: At the heart of Lodz's contemporary art

Our artistic adventure begins with a visit to the Museum of Art in Lodz MS2, located at 19 Ogrodowa St. This is a place that delights not only with its collection, but also with the exhibition space itself. MS2 is housed in the former Israel Poznański factory, which gives it a unique post-industrial character. The museum is easily accessible - it is located in the very center of the city, in the Manufaktura complex, which can be reached by many bus and streetcar lines.

The permanent exhibition 'Atlas of Modernity' is a must-see for any contemporary art lover. It presents works by Polish and foreign artists that represent a cross-section through the most important trends in 20th and 21st century art. It is worth noting the interactive elements of the exhibition, which also make it attractive to younger viewers.

After visiting MS2, it is worth walking along Piotrkowska Street, which is the heart of Lodz. Here you will find the City Gallery (113 Piotrkowska Street), which offers regularly changing exhibitions of contemporary art. This is a great opportunity to see the work of local artists and feel the artistic spirit of the city.

We can end the day with a visit to the Willa Gallery at 33 Wólczańska St. This intimate gallery is housed in a beautiful Art Nouveau villa and often presents exhibitions that combine contemporary art with historical surroundings. The gallery is open until 6pm, so plan your visit as the last point of the day.

Day 2: A Journey through the History and Modernity of Lodz's Culture

The second day of our artistic expedition begins with a visit to the Museum of Art in Lodz MS1, which is located at 43 Gdanska St. It is the oldest avant-garde art museum in the world, founded in 1930. The building in which it is located is a beautiful example of late 19th and early 20th century palace architecture, which is an attraction in itself.

MS1 is famous for its Collection of 20th- and 21st-century art, which includes works by artists such as Władysław Strzeminski, Katarzyna Kobro and Henryk Stażewski. The 'Neoplastic Room' exhibition is a unique experience, allowing you to immerse yourself in the world of the avant-garde of the 1920s and 1930s. The museum is accessible to people with disabilities and offers special educational programs for families with children.

After visiting MS1, head to the Central Textile Museum, located at 282 Piotrkowska St. This place combines the industrial history of Lodz with contemporary art. The museum is housed in the impressive complex of Ludwik Geyer's former factory and offers not only exhibitions related to the history of textile industry, but also holds regular exhibitions of contemporary art.

Of particular interest is the Art Gallery, where one can see, among other things, artistic textiles - a field in which Lodz artists have achieved international success. The museum also offers interactive demonstrations of the operation of textile machinery, which can be fascinating for both adults and children.

At the end of the day, we suggest a visit to the Museum of Cinematography at 1 Zwycięstwa Square. This is a unique place for movie lovers, located in the beautiful palace of Karol Scheibler. The museum presents the history of Polish cinematography, with particular emphasis on the achievements of the Lodz film school.

Day 3: Exploring Alternative Art Spaces

The third day of our artistic journey through Lodz will be devoted to exploring smaller, but equally fascinating art spaces that show how diverse and dynamic this city's art scene is.

We start with a visit to the ASP Gallery at 68 Piotrkowska St. This is a place where you can see works by students and graduates of the Academy of Fine Arts in Lodz, one of the best art schools in Poland. The gallery often presents experimental and innovative projects, which gives an opportunity to see the latest trends in contemporary art. The gallery is open Monday through Friday from 12:00 to 18:00, and admission is free.

Next, head to the Re:Medium Gallery at 113 Piotrkowska St. It's an intimate space that regularly hosts exhibitions by young, promising artists, but also by established artists. The gallery is famous for its interdisciplinary approach to art, presenting not only painting or sculpture, but also multimedia installations or performances. The gallery is open Tuesday through Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and on Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Admission is free.

We can spend the afternoon at the Eastern Gallery at 29 Wschodnia St. It is one of the oldest independent galleries in Poland, operating continuously since 1984. The place has an unusual atmosphere - it is located in a private apartment, which gives it a unique and intimate character. The gallery presents conceptual and experimental art, often organizing performances and meetings with artists. Due to the specific nature of the gallery, it is advisable to check opening hours in advance and make an appointment.

At the end of the day and the whole weekend, we suggest a visit to OFF Piotrkowska Center at 138/140 Piotrkowska St. This is not a typical gallery, but a creative space in a post-industrial complex, where you can find many small galleries, art studios, designer stores and cafes. This place is vibrant and perfectly reflects the contemporary spirit of Lodz as a creative city open to art.

Practical information:

  • All galleries listed are free of charge.
  • Most are accessible to people with disabilities, but it is worth confirming this before visiting.
  • There are numerous cafes and restaurants in the vicinity of each gallery, where you can relax and eat.

Remember that small galleries often have variable opening hours and may be closed while new exhibitions are being prepared. That's why it's always a good idea to check up-to-date information before visiting, preferably by calling or checking their social media profiles.

This three-day weekend in Lodz will allow you to immerse yourself in the city's rich art world, from established institutions to alternative spaces. Lodz, with its post-industrial architecture and dynamic art scene, offers a unique cultural experience that will live long in the memory.
