History and Architecture of the Fortress
Klodzko Fortress, located at 1 Grodzisko Street, is an impressive fortification complex rising 369 meters above sea level. The site is well connected - it is only a 15-minute walk from Klodzko train station, and access to the site is well marked. The fortress was built on the site of a former castle, and its current shape is mainly due to an 18th-century expansion. The fortification covers an area of about 30 hectares and consists of the Main Fortress and the Sheep Mountain Fort. The fortress' defensive system was designed with extreme precision - the massive walls, elaborate system of bastions and casemates are very impressive even to modern visitors. The most fascinating part of the complex is the system of underground counter-mine corridors with a total length of more than 40 kilometers. It is these underground routes that are one of the main attractions, especially for families with school-aged children.
Sightseeing and Attractions
The fortress offers two main tour options: the upper route and the underground route. The upper route can be visited alone or with a guide and takes about 2-2.5 hours. During it you can admire not only the impressive military architecture, but also the beautiful panorama of Klodzko and the surrounding mountains. There are numerous military exhibits along the route, including a real cannon and a tank, which are of particular interest to the youngest. The underground counter-mine tour is only available with a guide and lasts about an hour. For safety reasons, it is recommended for children over the age of 5. During the underground tour, the temperature is about 8-12 degrees, so be sure to bring warm clothing. The fortress is open daily, with opening hours varying according to the season. During the summer season (April-October), the facility is open from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., while during the winter season (November-March) it is open from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Practical Information and Surrounding Attractions
Admission tickets to the fortress can be purchased at the ticket office at the main entrance or booked online through the official website www.twierdza.klodzko.pl. Ticket prices vary depending on the route chosen and the age of the visitors. There is a food court and a souvenir store on the premises. Special events held at the fortress, such as night tours and historical re-enactments, are especially recommended for families with children. Also worth visiting in the immediate vicinity of the fortress is the historic Old Town of Klodzko with its Gothic St. John's Bridge, which is often referred to as a miniature of the Charles Bridge in Prague. For families with children, we recommend planning a full-day trip to fully enjoy all the attractions. Be sure to wear comfortable hiking shoes, as exploring the fortress involves climbing numerous stairs and uneven surfaces. Headgear and water will also be indispensable in the summer season, and warm clothing in colder weather, especially when exploring the underground.
