In the footsteps of Copernicus - from the family home to the monument
Our adventure with Toruń and Copernicus begins with a visit to the Nicolaus Copernicus House, located at 15/17 Nicolaus Copernicus St. This is the place where the future astronomer was born and spent the first years of his life. The museum is open daily from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, and admission tickets cost about PLN 26 per adult (as of 2024). It's worth reserving at least 1.5 hours for a visit to get a thorough look at the rich exhibition on Copernicus' life and work, as well as daily life in medieval Toruń.
After visiting Copernicus' family home, head to the Old Town Square, where you will find the majestic Nicolaus Copernicus Monument. This impressive bronze statue, standing on a high pedestal, is one of the most recognizable symbols of Toruń. The monument was unveiled in 1853 and has been a favorite meeting place and souvenir photo spot for tourists ever since. It is worth noting the details of the sculpture, which depicts an astronomer holding in his hands an astrolabe - a tool used to observe the sky.
Continuing our journey in the footsteps of Copernicus, we must not miss a visit to the W. Dziewulski Planetarium, located at 15 Franciszkańska St. This modern planetarium offers fascinating astronomical shows that will allow us to better understand Copernicus' discoveries and modern astronomy. The planetarium is open from Tuesday to Sunday, and tickets cost about 25-30 PLN per adult (as of 2024). It is advisable to book tickets in advance, especially during the tourist season, to avoid long waits.
An important point on the map of Copernican Torun is also the Old Town Hall, now home to the District Museum. Inside it you will find not only exhibits related to the history of the city, but also a room dedicated to Copernicus, where you can admire the famous portrait of the astronomer. The City Hall is open to the public from Tuesday to Sunday, and admission tickets cost about 20-25 zlotys per adult (as of 2024). An additional attraction is the opportunity to climb the Town Hall tower, from where you can enjoy a beautiful view of the Old Town skyline.
Gingerbread and legends - the Taste and soul of Toruń
Toruń is not only the city of Copernicus, but also the capital of Polish gingerbread. Our trip would not be complete without a visit to the Live Gingerbread Museum, located at 9 Rabianska St. This interactive museum allows us to travel back in time and make traditional Torun gingerbread with our own hands under the guidance of master gingerbread makers. The museum is open daily and tickets cost about 25-30 PLN per adult (as of 2024). It's worth reserving at least 1.5 hours for this sweet adventure.
While strolling through the Old Town, it is impossible not to notice the characteristic Leaning Tower, located at 1 Pod Krzywą Wieżą Street. This medieval tower, deviated from the vertical by 146 cm, is not only an architectural curiosity, but also the source of many legends. One of them says that the tower was built by the Teutonic Knights as punishment, and its crooked walls are the result of their sins. The tower is open to the public, and entry costs about PLN 10-15 per adult (as of 2024).
Strolling through the streets of the Old Town, it is worth noting the numerous Gothic houses, churches and the remains of the medieval walls. Each of these monuments has its own history and legend. Consider using a local guide, who will tell us fascinating tales related to every nook and cranny of the city.
For families with children, we recommend a visit to the Gingerbread Town, located at 62 Podmurna St. This is a unique playground where the youngest can play surrounded by giant gingerbread and learn about the city's history in a friendly way. Admission is free, and the place is open daily from morning until dusk.
In the evening, take a stroll along Philadelphia Boulevard on the Vistula River. This is the perfect place for a romantic stroll overlooking the illuminated walls of the Old Town. During the summer season, concerts and outdoor events are often held here.
When planning a visit to Torun, there are a few practical considerations to keep in mind. The Old Town is relatively small and easy to explore on foot, but comfortable footwear is essential due to the cobblestone streets. During the summer season, it's a good idea to bring headgear and water, especially when exploring open spaces. For families with small children, we recommend taking light snacks and drinks, although there is no shortage of cafes and restaurants in the city center.
Practical information and tips for visitors
When planning a visit to Torun, it is worth remembering a few important points that will help us fully enjoy the charms of the city. First of all, the best way to get to the center is by train - Toruń Główny train station is located about 2 km from the Old Town, and from there you can easily get to the center by public transport or cab.
When it comes to accommodation, there are plenty of options for different budgets in Torun. From luxurious hotels in historic tenements to cozy guesthouses and hostels. It is worth considering accommodation near the Old Town, which will make sightseeing easier and allow you to enjoy the atmosphere of the place in the evening as well.
For those planning intensive sightseeing, we recommend purchasing the Toruń Card, which offers discounts to many attractions and free travel on public transportation. The card can be purchased at tourist information centers and online.
As for gastronomy, in addition to traditional gingerbread, try local specialties in one of the restaurants in the Old Town. We particularly recommend 'Gospoda pod Modrym Fartuchem' at 6 Piekary Street, where they serve traditional Polish cuisine in a historic interior.
For astronomy buffs, in addition to the Planetarium, we recommend a visit to the Nicolaus Copernicus University Astronomical Observatory, which is located outside the city center in Piwnice. However, it should be remembered that visits should be arranged in advance.
Also worth noting are the cultural events taking place in the city. We particularly recommend the Skyway Light Festival, which takes place annually in August, turning the Old Town into a magical land of light installations.
For families with children, in addition to the aforementioned attractions, we recommend a visit to the Młyn Wiedzy Modernity Center at 5 Wladyslaw Lokietka St. This is an interactive science center where children can learn the secrets of physics, chemistry and biology through play.
Remember that Toruń is a city that is best explored by walking. Comfortable shoes are therefore essential. In the summer season, it's a good idea to bring headgear and water, especially when exploring open spaces. In winter, on the other hand, you need to remember to dress warmly, as walking around the old town can be quite chilly.
All in all, Torun is a city that has a lot to offer history and science lovers, as well as those looking for a romantic atmosphere or family attractions. Following in the footsteps of Nicolaus Copernicus, we will discover not only the fascinating history of one of the most eminent scholars in history, but also the charm of the medieval city, which still impresses with its beauty and atmosphere. Whether we are lovers of astronomy, gourmets of sweets, or simply looking for a place for a weekend full of excitement, Torun will certainly meet our expectations and leave us with unforgettable memories.
