Description
Wallingford Castle is a fascinating monument of medieval defensive architecture that played a key role in English history. Built shortly after the Norman Conquest (1067-1071), it was one of the most powerful royal fortresses of the 12th and 13th centuries.
Today you can admire the impressive remains of the walls and the motte hill, which survived partial demolition by order of Oliver Cromwell in 1652. This site witnessed the signing of the Treaty of Wallingford, ending the civil war between King Stephen and Empress Matilda.
The meadows surrounding the castle are home to rare plants and insects, making the site equally attractive to nature lovers.
