Description
Saint Angel's Castle is a fascinating monument with a rich history dating back to 134 AD, when it was built as Emperor Hadrian's mausoleum.
Over the centuries it has served a variety of functions - from emperors' tomb, to a defensive fortress, to a luxurious papal residence. The most distinctive feature is the statue of the Archangel Michael at the top, placed there after a vision by Pope Gregory I during a plague in 590.
The castle offers a spectacular view of Rome, and a secret Passetto di Borgo corridor connects it to the Vatican, once serving as an escape route for popes in times of danger.
