Description

Lancaster Castle is one of the most historically fascinating buildings in Britain. Its origins date back to Roman times, when a fort was built here between 60 and 73 AD.

This majestic building hides a dark history - it witnessed religious persecution, the Lancashire Witch trials and more than 200 executions. The oldest part of the castle, a defensive tower dating back to the 12th century, rises 20 meters high and has walls 3 meters thick.

Until 2011, the site functioned as a prison, and today visitors can tour the former cells and corridors, learning about changing attitudes to crime and belief over the centuries.
