Description
Mountain 126 - the ruins of Captain Wladyslaw Raginis' battle shelter (monument-mogila) is a place of great historical significance, known as 'Polish Thermopylae'.
In September 1939, Captain Raginis, along with 700 Polish soldiers, heroically defended this position against 40,000 German soldiers and 350 tanks. Despite the crushing superiority of the enemy, the Poles fought until they ran out of ammunition.
Today it is a touching monument-mausoleum commemorating the heroic stand of the defenders. The area also offers the natural attractions of the Biebrza National Park and the historic Tsar Road.
