Description
Santa Maria Novella in Florence is one of the most important Gothic churches in the city, combining Gothic and Renaissance styles. Built between 1279 and 1357, it impresses with a facade designed by Leon Battista Alberti.
The interior hides priceless art treasures - frescoes by masters such as Masaccio, Giotto, Filippino Lippi and Domenico Ghirlandaio. The Strozzi and Tornabuoni chapels are real gems for painting lovers.
It is also a place of great historical significance - in 1439, the Council of Florence was held here to unite the Greek and Latin Churches.
