Description
Vicars' Close is the oldest continuously inhabited medieval street in Europe, dating back to the 14th century.
This unique street is famous for its picturesque limestone houses, chapel and common hall, forming a cohesive medieval structure. An interesting optical illusion - the street appears longer on the Cathedral side and shorter on the north side thanks to a gradually widening cobblestone path.
All 27 residences are Class I buildings, built for the Vicars Choral - cathedral singers. The site even inspired John Keats when writing 'The Eve of St Agnes' in 1819.
