Description
The Ulugbek Observatory is a fascinating remnant of a 15th-century astronomical complex in Samarkand, built by Tamerlane's grandson. The monumental sector, with a radius of 40 meters, carved into the rock, allowed for precise measurements of celestial bodies with the naked eye, without any optical instruments.
It was here that a catalog of 1,018 stars was created and the length of the year was calculated with an accuracy of only 58 seconds of error! The ruins are surrounded by a small museum with replicas of instruments and busts of Ulugbek, a brilliant ruler and astronomer.
