Description
National Trust - Calke Abbey is a unique property with a Baroque manor house that was never an abbey, despite its name. The site is deliberately presented in the state of decay in which it was donated to the National Trust, which provides a remarkable insight into the dramatic decline of the country estate.
The 600 acres of grounds include nature preserves, ancient oak trees (including the 1,200-year-old 'Old Man of Calke'), a deer park and hidden ponds. For families, there is an Imagination Garden, a natural playground and a cross-country bike track.
History buffs will appreciate the rare Auricula Theater, a domed conservatory and faded greenhouses in the walled garden.
