Description
The Cistern of Theodosius is a fascinating Roman-era monument that has been hiding under the streets of Istanbul for centuries. Erected by Emperor Theodosius II between 428 and 443, this subterranean structure impresses with 32 marble columns 11 meters high supporting 45 sail vaults.
After years of oblivion, the cistern was rediscovered in 2010 and underwent extensive restoration. Today it combines ancient architecture with modern elements, such as the glass and steel entrance designed by architect Cafer Bozkurt.
It is a place where history meets contemporary art - the cistern regularly hosts art exhibitions in a unique historical setting.
