Description
Yoros Castle is a fascinating historical monument guarding the northern entrance to the Bosphorus. This 13th-century Byzantine castle, later taken over by the Genoese and Ottomans, hides a fascinating history of control over a key sea route.
The fortress walls offer breathtaking views of the Bosphorus and the Black Sea. According to legends, there are mysterious tunnels under the castle that lead to the sea, now buried or overgrown with vegetation.
On the walls, one can see subtle Byzantine religious sculptures, Genoese symbols and Greek inscriptions of the Paleologan dynasty - the last ruling dynasty of Byzantium.
