Description
Treaty Stone is a historic stone in Limerick on which, according to tradition, the Treaty of Limerick was signed in 1691, ending the Williamick War in Ireland.
This rough limestone block, about three meters high, has a smooth surface and rounded corners. Despite the treaty's liberal terms promising respect for Catholicism, it was soon broken, leading to a long history of restrictions against Irish Catholics.
The stone offers a picturesque view of the Shannon River and nearby King John's Castle. Local legends also attribute magical powers and mystical properties to it.
