Description
Obelisk also known as Cleopatra's Needle is the oldest outdoor monument in New York City. This fascinating monument is about 3,500 years old and was created in ancient Egypt in honor of the 30th anniversary of the reign of Pharaoh Theotome III.
Rising 21 meters high, the granite colossus is covered with hieroglyphics on all sides, a rare sight outside Egypt.
Transporting this 200-ton giant from Alexandria to New York City between 1880 and 1881 was a remarkable feat of engineering that is a fascinating story in itself.
