Description
John Alexander Logan Monument is an impressive monument located in Grant Park in Chicago. It commemorates General Logan, a Civil War hero and creator of Memorial Day.
Created by famous sculptors Augustus Saint-Gaudens and Alexander Phimister Proctor, the work depicts the general on horseback, perched on a grassy hill that would have been the burial place for Logan and his wife.
It is interesting to note that the monument stands on an empty tomb, as the general's remains were never moved from Washington. A wreath-laying ceremony is held here every year on Memorial Day.
