Description
Tintern Abbey is the picturesque ruins of a Cistercian abbey located on the River Wye in Wales. Founded in 1131 by Walter de Clare, it is the oldest Cistercian foundation in Wales and the second in Britain.
The impressive red sandstone Gothic architecture delights history and art lovers. The abbey, immortalized in the poetry of William Wordsworth, has become a symbol of romantic beauty.
In addition to the main temple, note the unique castellated bridge over the stream and the remains of a large lime kiln, testifying to industrial activity in the area in the 17th and 18th centuries.
