Description
Wat Mahathat is one of the most important temples of the former Kingdom of Ayutthaya, built in 1374.
Its most distinctive feature is the head of a stone Buddha statue entwined with tree roots - an iconic sight that has become a symbol of the place.
The temple was designed according to the concept of ancient Khmer mountain temples, symbolizing the Hindu and Buddhist image of the universe. The central prang, once rising to a height of 46 meters, represented Mount Meru.
It's a place full of mystery and spirituality, ideal for history and architecture lovers.
