Description

St Oswald's Priory is one of the oldest surviving buildings in Gloucester, dating back to the late 9th and early 10th centuries. Originally built as a church by the rulers of the Saxon kingdom of Mercia, Aethelred and Aethelflaed.

It is a site of extraordinary historical and spiritual significance, which attracted pilgrims after the relics of St. Oswald were transferred here in 909. In the ruins, visitors can admire fragments of the original Saxon structure and arches dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries.

For history buffs, it's a real treat - stones from Roman times were used in the walls, which are still visible today.

avatarElizabeth Deea week agoFounded by Lady Aethelflaed of Mercia, daughter of King Alfred (the Great). Lady Aethelflaed was a name only known to me after watching The Last Kingdom! The beautiful Priory is in ruins, and nothing much surrounding it. Nothing here other than the ruins, but a beautiful place nonetheless ... no entry charge, just a place to wander into, and very close to the Cathedral.
avatarVicky Tredell5 years agoI love the history behind this ruin. There isn't much left to see but if you have an interest in the history of King Alfred you may like to visit here as this was once the residence of his daughter and her husband.
avatarMichael Arthur8 months agoSure, it’s in ruins, and there isn’t much to see. But this has to be one of the most significant locations in all of English history. You can feel Æthelflæd’s glory emanating from the stones!
