Description
St Oswald's Priory is one of the oldest surviving buildings in Gloucester, dating back to the late 9th and early 10th centuries. Originally built as a church by the rulers of the Saxon kingdom of Mercia, Aethelred and Aethelflaed.
It is a site of extraordinary historical and spiritual significance, which attracted pilgrims after the relics of St. Oswald were transferred here in 909. In the ruins, visitors can admire fragments of the original Saxon structure and arches dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries.
For history buffs, it's a real treat - stones from Roman times were used in the walls, which are still visible today.
