Description
St. Christoph's Church is a unique Gothic monument in the heart of Mainz, built between 1240 and 1330.
The church is closely associated with Johannes Gutenberg, who was probably baptized here. Next to the church stands a modern monument to this famous inventor of printing.
Partially destroyed during World War II, today it is a moving war memorial. The preserved exterior walls and Romanesque tower dating back to 1240 are reminders of the city's turbulent history.
Ecumenical prayers for peace are held in a small chapel inside the ruins, and beautiful stained glass windows designed by Alois Plum add to the unique character of the place.

Wayne Ralph2 years agoThis is such an important place to visit win in Mainz due to the historic nature of the site. It is one of the few ruins left over after the war and a place that definitely should be preserved so that we remember what it was actually like for them.
Danny Marvels3 years agoBeautiful place. There's seats to sit in front of the church and a nice small park. The place itself is illuminated by some light installations. Its very quiet although you're in the middle of the city.
Benjamin Koester7 years agoCame across this by accident on our way to the river. Not quite sure what's going on here, as its more ruins than a functioning church. There was a sort of art exhibit inside, and some explanations in German that I haven't translated...probably could google or wikipedia the church, but you get the idea.Where are we?
