Description
The St. Mary's Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Gdansk is one of the largest brick churches in the world, able to accommodate as many as 25,000 people.
This Gothic architectural gem impresses with its impressive interior with beautiful altars, sculptures and stained glass windows. A real treasure is the 15th-century astronomical clock created by Hans Düringer, showing not only the time, but also the phases of the moon and the signs of the zodiac.
It is worth climbing the 78-meter tower (400 stairs!) to admire the panorama of Gdansk, Motlawa River and the Baltic Sea. The best visual effect is a visit in the early morning or late afternoon, when the sun's rays penetrate the stained glass windows.
