Description
Royal Monastery of Santa María de Guadalupe is a unique monument combining mudéjar, Gothic and Baroque architectural styles. It was built in the 13th century after shepherd Gil Cordero discovered a statue of the Virgin Mary by the Guadalupe River.
The site symbolizes two key historical events: the reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula and the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the Americas. The monastery hides extraordinary art treasures, including works by Zurbarán, El Greco and Giordano.
The Mudéjar Cloister of Miracles, a Gothic cloister and museums with illuminated manuscripts, sculptures and reliquaries are worth seeing.
