Description
San Vicente Mártir (Plaza de España) is a Baroque marble sculpture from around 1835, created by Carlos Cloostermans y Vox (or attributed to Ignacio Vergara). It depicts the patron saint of Valencia holding the symbols of his martyrdom—a mill wheel and an instrument of torture.
The statue stands on a pedestal commemorating the saint's role during the plague epidemic of 1677. According to local legend, this site was once a rubbish dump where the saint's body was abandoned after his martyrdom around 304 AD.
The sculpture was restored and reinstalled in 1960, forming a historic pair of sculptures in the heart of Valencia with the nearby monument to El Cid.
