Description
Castillo de Monfragüe is the ruins of a 9th-century Arab castle, perched atop a hill in Monfragüe National Park. The fortress, which survived centuries of fighting between Moors and Christians, offers breathtaking views of the Tagus River and circling vultures.
The preserved defensive tower and the Virgen de Monfragüe chapel are home to legends of werewolf knights and Moorish princesses. Nearby are prehistoric rock paintings in the Abrigo del Castillo cave, accessible during guided tours.
