Description

The Castle of Good Hope is the oldest surviving colonial building in South Africa—a pentagonal fortress from the 17th century, built by the Dutch East India Company.

Five bastions named after William III of Orange form a star-shaped defensive structure. Inside, you will discover the country's oldest bell from 1697, weighing over 300 kg, and a collection of art and artifacts from the colonial era. The fortress, never attacked, was built from local granite and slate from Robben Island by slaves and settlers.
