Description
Santuario di San Bernardino alle Ossa is an extraordinary temple in the heart of Milan, famous for its unique chapel decorated with human skulls and bones.
This place where the sacred meets macabre art was created in the 13th century as a solution to an overcrowded cemetery. Bones arranged in intricate patterns on the walls, ceilings and pillars create a mesmerizing atmosphere of reverie.
The interior of the church is stunning with Baroque frescoes, including Sebastiano Ricci's 1695 work 'Triumph of Souls and Flying Angels.' This fascinating blend of spirituality, history and art even inspired King John V of Portugal, who created a similar chapel in his country.
