Description
Santa Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini is a unique church in Rome, combining spirituality with macabre fascination.
Built between 1626 and 1631 at the behest of Pope Urban VIII, it houses an extraordinary crypt adorned with the remains of some 4,000 Capuchin monks. The bones are arranged in elaborate patterns and motifs, creating a work of art with a profound spiritual message.
The interior of the church impresses with a single nave with ten side chapels and a marble main altar with the painting 'Conception' by Gioacchino Bombelli.
It is a place of reflection on the transience of life, with a memorable maxim: "What you are, we were; what we are, you will be".
