Description
The Shrine of Our Lady of Sameiro is a unique place of spiritual reflection near Braga, Portugal.
This neoclassical shrine, whose construction began in 1863, impresses with its simplicity and purity of architecture. The main altar is adorned with a silver tabernacle and a statue of the patroness carved in Rome and brought to the shrine in 1880.
The site was honored with a Golden Rose by Pope John Paul II in 2004, who visited the shrine in 1982. The interior is enhanced by tile panels by Cherub Lapa and sculptures by Clara Menéres.

Grigory Grin2 months agoDefinitely a must see when visiting Braga. We didn't expect such a monumental place. I cannot even say I "liked" it. The area is huge and overdimensioned and gives a very special feeling. Maybe comparable with former Nazi Rally Ground in Nuremberg. It makes you think. Portugal must have a very special relation with the catholic church. You need to be there and feel. Pick a sunny day and plan several hours.
Bom Jesus is another important catholic place nearby, you could combine the visit, but maybe you shouldn't, because the impact is totally different.
Caitlin Zipp10 months agoWe saw this on the way to Bom Jesus Do Monte and speed to have a look. We didn't go into the basilica, but admired it from the outside. The complex that the sanctuary is on is vast and beautiful. The steps leading up to the church and the columns are majestic
