Description

Salona Archaeological Site - Roman Ruins is a fascinating archaeological site that is the remains of the ancient capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia.

Here you can admire the impressive ruins of a 2nd century amphitheater that could hold up to 18,000 spectators, as well as the remains of a thermal baths, a cemetery basilica and a cathedral with an octagonal baptistery.

The site was a significant center of early Christianity, as evidenced by numerous sarcophagi and inscriptions in Latin and Greek. A walk among these ancient walls is a true journey back in time to the glory days of the Roman Empire.

The building has some interesting information on the building and it's history and purpose. The star are the remains of the roman city that are quite extensive. Display boards throughout help you understand the layout of the city and where you are in it. It is a short walk down a path to reach the amphitheater and Basilica of the Five Martyrs. There is parking and another entrance at the amphitheater. The view back to the harbor is quite impressive and the site is well worth the visit. So many remains of roman cities are not so easy to access or understand. The city has some development around it but not so much that it makes it hard to understand why this was chosen as a site for the ancient city.
avatarCaitlin Sewell2 weeks agoRuins okay, could have been better preserved, more relevant info/sign-posting. Felt super underfunded. Staff member was rude and tainted the entire experience. Was super dodgy that he wouldn't let us pay by card when inside the museum. Give this a miss unless you're a major archeology or roman history fan.
avatarKyle Heijdendael11 months agoThe site is quite well preserved. It was very nice to see and stroll around. The surrounding sights are stunning as well (nature and mountains in the background). One of the better preserved Roman sites I have seen so far. You can see the layout of the centre through the structure of the buildings. Entrance to the site is not free of charge. Beware of the heat during summer, especially between 11.00h and 15.00h, as there is not much shade.

Where are we?
