Description
Royal Garrison Church is a unique monument with over 800 years of history in Portsmouth. Originally built in 1212 as part of a hospital and hostelry for pilgrims, it has served a variety of functions from munitions storage to part of the Portsmouth governor's house.
Most fascinating is the fact that the church's nave has remained roofless since the 1941 bombing, providing a moving memorial to the World War II air raids.
The interior is resplendent with beautiful 20th century stained glass windows depicting war scenes and commemorative plaques dedicated to famous regiments and soldiers. It is a place where history comes alive at every turn.
