Description

Rocca a Mare Fortress is an impressive 16th century Venetian fortification, also known as Koules, guarding the entrance to the port of Heraklion, Crete.

This majestic 3,600-square-meter building impresses with its massive stone walls, towers and battlements. The first floor contains 26 rooms that served as food stores, ammunition depots and prisons, while the first floor housed the commander's apartments, a furnace, a mill and a small church.

The terrace of the fortress offers a breathtaking view of the harbor and the city skyline. It's an ideal place for history and architecture lovers, as well as those who want to explore the legacy of the Venetian presence in Crete.
