Description
The Old Coimbra Cathedral is a unique monument of Romanesque architecture dating back to the 12th century that has survived to our time in almost intact condition.
Its interior impresses with its wealth of carved capitals, representing one of the most important collections of Romanesque sculpture in Portugal. Of particular interest is the Renaissance portal Porta Especiosa and the magnificent Gothic altarpiece made by Flemish sculptors in the early 16th century.
The cathedral's cloisters, built in 1218, show the fascinating transformation of the Romanesque style into Gothic. It is the perfect place for lovers of history, architecture and spirituality.
