Description
Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación, also known as the Primate's Cathedral of America, is a historic jewel in the heart of Santo Domingo's colonial zone.
This unique temple combines Gothic, mudéjar, Renaissance and Plateresque styles, impressing with three richly decorated portals. The interior of the cathedral is decorated with beautiful stained glass windows and numerous works of religious art, including a 1523 painting of Our Lady of Altagracia.
As the first cathedral of the New World (established by Pope Paul III in 1546), it held the remains of Christopher Columbus for a time, which adds to its extraordinary historical significance.
