Description
The Palermo Cathedral is an architectural gem, combining Norman, Islamic, Gothic, Baroque and Neoclassical styles.
Erected in 1185 on the site of an earlier Byzantine basilica, the cathedral has witnessed the turbulent history of Sicily - it even served as a mosque during Arab rule.
As part of a UNESCO heritage site, it impresses with its rich decorations, mosaics and royal tombs, including those of Roger II, the first king of Sicily. The Latin cross-shaped interior conceals numerous treasures of sacred art, making the cathedral a must-see for history and architecture lovers.
