Description
The Aachen Cathedral is one of the oldest religious buildings in Europe, listed by UNESCO. Commissioned by Emperor Charlemagne between 793 and 813, it combines Carolingian, Romanesque, Gothic and Ottonian styles.
The interior of the octagonal palace chapel is stunning with mosaics, bronze doors and marble columns. The cathedral treasury hides priceless works of art, including Lotar's cross and Charlemagne's reliquary.
The marble throne used during the coronation of emperors of the Holy Roman Empire is one of the most valuable elements of this remarkable building.
